About Rob

Background

Rob was born in Dewsbury and is now 28 years old. For two years, around his 21 st birthday he lived happily in Halifax with his partner, Matt, before an acrimonious separation which over time did nevertheless did develop into a long standing friendship – one which lasts to this day and without which Rob would have no contact with the outside world, with the exception of his Mother, Ann.

Robert, then 24 (in Jan 2002), was detained by crime suppression officers at Bangkok's Don Muang airport as he was about to leave on a flight to Dubai on suspicion of child sex offences.

Rob said he had been denied access to British embassy officials or British police officers. Thai officers said he had molested as many as nine Thai boys, aged seven to 13 years, since he arrived in Thailand last August.

Police claimed to have found six of those boys who would identify the Rob, said Pol Col Thawee. One of the six boys told police that had been paid 100-200 baht for each photo session.

The boy also said the suspect had a friend called ``David'' who served as the photographer, he said. Police later identified the Rob’s “friend“ as David Lee Leach, 30, also a British national.

Rob Writes........

Hi. My name is Robert Wood, I am gay, and I made a mistake for which I am now paying a high price. people who get to know me for WHO I am find I'm a friendly, laid-back and (usually) happy guy. I'm also desperately in need of help, so I hope that the Embassy officials are wrong and that people, maybe you, will be interested in getting in touch with me. Hence this web site. I hope people do get in touch and I'm sure it will be very rewarding all round. For now I can only write and send occasional photos but I promise I will never forget anyone that helps out.

Thanks for visiting my site. I hope you find it interesting and that it gives an insight into who I am, where I am, and my regrets for what I did to land me in here in the first place. This web site is maintained by my ex partner, Matt, to who I send regular updates. Matt can be contacted by e-mail at webmaster@bangkwangrob.com.

For those of you who know about Westerners imprisoned in Thailand, you might think we receive a lots of support from our Embassies and visiting tourists - and at least for some of the Westerners in here, that is certainly true. But not for me, and I will explain why...........

You see, I don't get visits because of what I did. In Thailand, and to may Thai people, my crime isn't so bad but in the Western world the word is (get ready to leave this site)...... paedophile.

I hope you are still here and reading, as the word describes what I did, and not who I am. I regret what I did, if not purely for the shame and heartbreak it brought upon my friends and family. Whether you believe me or not, I can say with absolute sincerity that I would never sleep with underage boys ever again. Clearly, whether you believe me or not is your own decision, however I will not disappoint my Mother for a second time!

I know that what I did was wrong, so I accept my punishment. What I find hard to accept is people who seem to wish to punish me further. Well I'm asking through this web site that people try to look past what I did.

Please visit my HELP ME section.

Matt writes..........

Deciding whether or not to help Rob was, to some degree, something of a moral dilemma.

I met Rob through work eight or nine years ago. Over a period of time we fell for each other, and eventually ended up living together. Rob was the first and only person I have ever lived with and the year we spent living in Halifax, together, was a very happy one for me. I loved him. Simple as. The thing is, I fell in love with the kind, stubborn, lovable, annoying, affectionate, unreasonable and thoroughly nice guy that was Rob!

As often happens, things became rocky (not helped by me working away from home most days of the week) and eventually we split up. Rob continued to live nearby in Halifax, and we continued to see each other and continued to be friends.

Rob moved away a couple of years later and I saw very little of him, apart from the occasional flying visit if I was working down that way. Another year or so and I was sitting in my office one evening when I received a call from a friend. Rob had been arrested. WHAT A BOMBSHELL. You can see the news items in the NEWS section of this site relating to his arrest and trial. You cannot imagine the feelings myself and his family experienced. Having known Rob for probably five years I never had the slightest inclination that he might get into the sort of things he had done!

Through a sense of obligation I have kept in touch with Rob by letter since his incarceeration. I cannot understand and most certainly do not condone what he has done. But by the same token, neither can I sit back and watch Rob, my Rob, the Rob that I loved, sit alone in the hell hole that is Bang Kwang, knowing that he has lost the last of his friends and family on who he relies for contact with the outside world.
